Welcome
Welcome to Mike's Beer Barn. A Tallahassee landmark for over 50 years. Located
across from Florida State, Mike's Beer Barn was originally started by founder and owner Mike Norman.
The former FSU football player, 77, pioneered Mike's Beer Barn to serve an assortment of college students,
townspeople, football fans and transients for over three generations.
Norman expanded the Beer Barn by adding a gas station in 1956. He was the first in town to sell beer and gas
from the same store and the first to sell kegs, a staple of college parties. He sold tires, repaired cars and
operated a car wash. In 1961, furious because of an overnight burglary, he ripped off his garage doors and
became one of the city's first 24-hour operations.
Mike's Beer Barn continues to enjoy legendary success. Playboy magazine dubbed it the No. 1 beer retailer in the
nation in the early 1970s. Officials called it the state's largest independent beer retailer during the 1980s.
New York Yankees manager Dick Howser once joked to The New York Times that if Yankees owner George Steinbrenner
didn't treat him better, he'd quit "and go to work for Mike's Beer Barn in Tallahassee."
